No, there's no signing into what someone else signs you up for if you're someone like me. Going back to how the brain can add a compartment to think and process more, it's just natural for some of us to sign up, for literally everything the mind wants to do, for it's own sanity! How convenient to prioritize the act of overloading oneself for the sake of sanity! Not much choice, since the contrary devil's workshop obviously is a no brainer "No"! The list is long - from work place ones, to kids' school based and family/social groups based ones. And oh there's the bucket list that is almost always bottomless! All this between the hustle and bustle of work, school, chauffeuring kids for classes and getting food on table thrice a day!
I recall going to the Destination Imagination (Kids STEAM challenge) awareness meet when my then kindergartner was a just a month into her new school. I remember telling the husband person that I would just gather information and enroll her into it only the subsequent year. I ended up meeting two like-minded parents there, who were equally interested but wanted to wait since they couldn't commit. 30 mins after returning home, I was found guilty of writing introductory email to the parents, suggesting I can be the team manager and we should totally form a team!
When the husband person tried interventions, I picked up more work, to do what my mind wanted to do! When he put his foot down about having to deal with younger one when I was taking online Tamil classes, I still signed up the subsequent year, gave the little brat a coloring book and kept her in my room during class!
At that going rate, the sanity was bang on, but the mind wanted more! Mind wanted to join PTA board to explore something new. And thankfully since the mind was kept sane all along, it also knew it was about time to give up one thing to get another. When I finally did sign out of one sidebar task, there was some unknown feeling of liberation! The joy of knowing the mind could function with one less thing, is totally worth reprioritizing and reprocessing and signing out of a few more!
The end goal - continue to sign up for new, and sign out of a few I guess! Thankfully the family isn't reading into this plan! Phew!
